Sir Christopher John Chataway
(1931-2014), Politician; MP for Lewisham North and Chichester, television broadcaster and middle and long distance runner; OlympianSitter in 17 portraits
Chataway competed in the European Championships, Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. In 1954, he won gold in the 3 mile run at the Commonwealth Games in Vancouver and became the first BBC Sports Personality of the Year. He retired from international athletics after the Olympics of 1956, becoming a broadcaster, politician and businessman.
