Sarah Waters

Writer Sarah Waters was born in Neyland, Pembrokeshire and later moved with her family to Middlesbrough. Intending to pursue an academic career, she wrote her PhD thesis on lesbian historical fiction, which then inspired her own works of fiction. Her first novel, Tipping the Velvet (1998), set in 1890s London, won a 1999 Betty Trask Award and was adapted for BBC drama in 2002. Many of her subsequent novels have also been adapted for film and television, including Affinity (1999), Fingersmith (2002) and The Night Watch (2006). She is recipient of the South Bank Award for Literature (2003) and was named Author of the Year at the 2003 British Book Awards.
