Born in Swansea into a Welsh-speaking family and educated at Dynevor Secondary School, Williams went on to study theology at Christ's College, Cambridge, and obtained his doctorate from Wadham College, Oxford, later becoming Professor of Theology at Oxford (1986-1992). He was enthroned as Bishop of Monmouth in 1992, and Archbishop of Wales in 2000, consecrated Archbishop of Canterbury in 2002. Williams has published several books including two volumes of poetry. He was a member of the Church Schools Review Group led by Lord Dearing and chaired the group that produced the report Wales: a Moral Society?.
