Daughter of Playwright and Barrister, John Mortimer, Emily studied English and Russian at Lincoln College, Oxford. After appearing on stage in a student production, she was cast in the television adaptation of Catherine Cookson's The Glass Virgin (1995). Her first film role was opposite Val Kilmer in the thriller The Ghost and the Darkness (1996). Subsequent films include Elizabeth (1998), Notting Hill (1999), Lovely and Amazing (2002), for which she won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female (2003), Young Adam (2003) and Dear Frankie (2004).
