As Commander in Chief Land Command (2000-2) and Chief of the General Staff (2003-6), Jackson played a significant role in military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Earlier, he commanded one of the three NATO divisions in Bosnia (1995-6), and NATO's Rapid Reaction Corps (1997-9). As commander of the Kosovo Force, an operation to end the ethnic cleansing of Albanians in the former Yugoslavia, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for leadership. He remains a high-profile commentator on international military affairs, particularly the post-war administration of Iraq.
