Alfred Thomas Derby

(1821-1873), Watercolour painter

Artist associated with 30 portraits
Alfred Derby was the son of watercolour and miniature painter William Derby. After studying at the Royal Academy schools, he painted portraits and scenes from the novels of Walter Scott. In 1838, his father had a stroke, and until his father's death, he helped him to carry on producing watercolour copies of paintings by a number of other artists. After his father's death Derby continued to paint watercolours, mainly producing copies. He exhibited twenty-two pictures, mainly portraits, at the Royal Academy between 1848 and 1872, and also exhibited at the British Institution and the Suffolk Street Gallery.
