The original portrait that this is copied from once hung at Brockwood Park in Hampshire, that was, for nearly 80 years under the proprietorship of the Greenwood family. They owned a vast portion of the parish of Bramdean and Hinton Ampner from c1807-1880? and were a family of artists, lawyers and geologists.
It is probable that the lady in this portrait (named as Mrs Greenwood) was the wife of William Greenwood (d.1844 at Brockwood Park). Her name was Christiana Greenwood(d.1822).
The 1824 publication Views of the Seats of Noblemen and Gentlemen in England, Wales and Scotland states that the original Mrs Greenwood portrait by Sir William Beechey then hung in the house, along with various pictures by Canaletti, Cuyp and Teniers.
