(1868-1933), Viceroy of India and First Lord of the AdmiraltySitter in 5 portraits
Chelmsford served in India as a captain in the 4th Dorset Territorials before he became Viceroy of India (1916-21). He ensured that reforms, including greater representation and provisional autonomy, were introduced in preparation for future Indian self-rule. He led the Indian delegation to the League of Nations in 1922 and joined the Labour government of 1924 as First Lord of the Admiralty.
