Thomas Henry Marlowe

A significant figure in Fleet Street, Marlowe joined the Star as a reporter in 1888 and moved to the Evening News in 1894. Appointed news editor of the recently launched Daily Mail he became its managing director in 1899. He was associated with the infamous 'Zinoviev' letter, the publication of which was intended to bring down the Labour government of 1924. Two years later, his clash with printers over a leading article denouncing the trade union movement contributed to the start of the General Strike.
