Reyner Banham

(1922-1988), Architectural critic and historian

Sitter in 2 portraits
Receiving his doctorate from the Courtauld Institute of Art, in the mid 1950s Banham with Richard Hamilton, Eduardo Paolozzi and others formed the Independent Group at the ICA, which explored everyday arts. His writings on modern material culture featured in the New Statesman and New Society, and he was Executive Director of The Architectural Review, until 1965. Banham's reputation was confirmed by the publication Theory and Design in the First Machine Age (1960). Later books included Los Angeles: the Architecture of Four Ecologies (1971).

Sometimes we have not recorded the date of a portrait. Do you have specialist knowledge or a particular interest about any aspect of the portrait or sitter or artist that you can share with us? We would welcome any information that adds to and enhances our information and understanding about a particular portrait, sitter or artist.
