Only child of a Bermondsey congregational minister, Percival Ross Wheatley was born on the 4 May 1909 in Westbury, Wiltshire where he grew up. He graduated as a doctor and served as an officer in the Royal Army Medical Corps in India at the time of Indian Independence and the partition. His wife, Dorothy Dorothy Jean Fellows Brock came from Coventry. The couple married in Stoke Bishop, Bristol in July 1939.
