Marianne North

(1830-1890), Painter and traveller

Sitter in 3 portraits
Marianne North travelled the globe in order to satisfy her passion for painting the world's fauna and flora. Having first travelled with her widowed father, after his death she took up a peripatetic life, painting the flowers of the many countries she visited. In the course of her travels, North crossed every continent and had four new species of plant named after her. Her focus, however, was always on painting; she was primarily a painter who travelled, rather than a traveller who painted. She presented her collection to Kew, where it was displayed in a gallery that she designed and financed.
