John Douglas 1813 Dollar, Clackmannan was a brother of my great grandfather Gabriel Douglas 1822 Muirkirk, Ayrshire. In his early photographic and artistic career, John was a Snuff Box Painter and Portrait Painter in Cumnock (Old Cumnock) Ayrshire. He is listed in the Pigot’s Directory of 1837. He later moved on to Glasgow by the mid 1840’s and commenced his Photographic business - including carte de visite; and his Artistic business of being a Portrait Painter. He had six sons, five of whom joined him in his businesses - Walter, John, Robert, William and Arthur. His other son was Thomas, who became an Accountant and Insurance Broker. John’s business was listed under John Douglas & Son and also J Douglas & Son. He later expanded his businesses to Helensburgh. Sally Douglas.
