Born in Letchworth, Smith studied at the Luton School of Art and St Albans School of Art before attending the Royal College of Art. A sojourn in New York (1959-1961) introduced him to Pop imagery, which influenced the large, layered paintings in his first solo show. For the rest of the 1960s, his work combined formal abstraction with imagery of consumer goods, corporate symbols and everyday objects. In the early 1970s, he made paintings reminiscent of kites, with metal, canvas and string. He had solo exhibitions at the ICA (1962), Whitechapel Art Gallery (1966) and Hayward Gallery (1973) in London and the Jewish Museum, New York (1968). In 2004 he took part in 'Art from the '60s - This was Tomorrow' at Tate.
