Jason ('Jam Master Jay') Mizell

Born in Brooklyn, NYC, Mizell began playing trumpet, bass guitar and drums at a young age. After moving to Queen's, NY, with his family in 1975, he discovered turntables, becoming a DJ and going by the name of 'Jam Master Jay'. Already performing publicly, he agreed to DJ for Jospeph Run' Simmons and Darryl ('DMC') McDaniels and Run-DMC was born 1982. During the 1980s, Run-DMC.became one of the most successful hip-hop group, widely credited with bringing hip-hop into mainstream music. He also founded his own record label Jam Master Jay Records. On October 30, 2002, while recording at his studio in the Jamaica area of Queens, NYC, Mizell was shot dead by an unknown assailant.
