Mathew B. Brady
(1822-1896), PhotographerArtist associated with 19 portraits
Matthew Brady, also known as 'Mr Lincoln's cameraman' for his famous images of the American Civil War, is the best-known American photographer of the nineteenth century. Born in New York, he opened his first studio on lower Broadway in 1844 after learning the tools of the trade from Samuel Morse. He immediately became the city's, and then the nation's, most famous photographer, albeit one of the few working as a portrait artist. When the Civil War started in 1861, Brady received permission to accompany soldiers onto the battlefield. With his assistants he produced the first photographic portrait ever of battlefields, campsites and military leaders.
