Born in Calcutta, Srila attended the Scottish Church College where he graduated in English, Philosophy and Economics. Whilst there he became invovled with both the English and Sanskrit societies, setting a foundation for his vocation in bringing the Vedic scriptures and the teachings of Krishna to the West. He founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), popularly known as the "Hare Krishna" movement. He is also regarded as a leading authority on bhakti yoga. A scholar and teacher, Bhaktivedanta Swami translated over sixty volumes of classic Vedic scriptures into the English language in the last twenty years of his life.
