Henry Cust was my great grandfather. My grandfather was Alan Darcy Bradshaw. I have a tobacco jar which a gift to Henry Cust from the servants and staff of Fairoaks dated 1896

With regards to Henry Cust Bradshaw and his marriage to Emilie Laurencine Vail with took place on January 4th 1876 at Pau, France, this was reported in the Berkshire Chronicle newspaper as well as the Hampshire Advertiser newspaper, in their editions of the 8th January 1876.It is mentioned that Henry is the son of James Edward Bradshaw of Fair Oak Park, Hampshire, whilst Emilie is the daughter of the Honorable Aaron Vail of New York. A daughter was born at Pau on October 25th 1876.I assumed this was Frances Mary Laurencine Hope this info helps.

Martin - Charlotte's sister was Frances Mary Laurencine - my younger sister was named Frances after her. She was commonly known in our family as Arggie and her husband, Charlie Steele, was known as Uncle Tacky, for unknown reasons. They owned a house called Villa Rosalie in Pau in the South of France, and also had a houseboat in London somewhere - I grew up playing the half-size piano from that boat. They had no children.
As far as the family is aware, Charlotte and Frances were full sisters (Frances being the elder one) and they had the same parents - Henry Cust Bradshaw and Charlotte Bridson, who lived at Fair Oak Park in Hampshire. So I'm not sure where Emilie fits into this picture and wonder whether she may be a red herring - I'm curious to know what links you found that connected her to Frances Mary? Also would love to learn more about the Bradshaw file you have at the hotel! Thanks, Louise.

I need clarification. Was Henry Cust Bradshaw previously married to Emilie Laurencine Vail and did they have a daughter called Frances Mary Laurencine Bradshaw who in turn married a Mr Steele, son of Lady Steele of 70 Eaton Square, London? If anyone can help it would be most appreciated. I work at Audleys Wood Hotel in Basingstoke which in years gone by was the home of William Bradshaw, the older brother of Henry Cust Bradshaw. Henry attended the funeral of William's first wife Elizabeth Isabella Floretta Burdon Chandless who was more commonly known as Etta. She was killed in a horse riding accident on October 10th 1889. I have a large file concerning the Bradshaws. Have also been to Fair Oak to view the family graves. Fair Oak Park was sold off in 1970s and a housing estate built on the land.

These are my great grandparents. We believe the photograph was taken on the occasion of the marriage of their daughter, Magdalen Robinson, to John Hunt, at Hale House in Churt, Surrey.
Roy Lister Robinson was a Rhodes Scholar from Australia, an Oxford Blue in Rowing and Lacrosse, and went on to found the Forestry Commission. He was born March 8, 1883 to William Robinson and Annie Lowe of Adelaide, Australia, and died of pneumonia in Canada on September 5th 1952. He was made Lord Robinson of Kielder in recognition of his work in the Forestry Commission, providing vital wood for the war effort.
Charlotte, or Daidie as she was known to her descendants, was born February 25th 1887, the daughter of Henry Cust Bradshaw and Charlotte Brideson, of Fair Oak Park in Hampshire. Henry Bradshaw was a direct descendant of John Bradshaw (1602-1659), Judge Regicide and President of the commission to try King Charles 1. Charlotte died of breast cancer June 1, 1975.
They had three children: Wing Commander Michael Robinson, who was lost in action during the Battle of Britain; Theresa Richey, editor of British Vogue during the 1950s and wife of Paul Richey, author of "Fighter Pilot"; and Magdalen Robinson, wife of John Hunt, later Baron Hunt of Tanworth and former British Cabinet Secretary.

I have written a history of Fair Oak and can be contacted through Fair Oak Parish Council. We know very little about the Bradshaws and their philanthropic work in the village. If anyone knows anything about their work in the village please get in touch . I would particularly like a photo of the tobacco jar owned by Robert Bradshaw. Thank you.
