Bernard de Nogaret de la Valette lived from 1592 to 1661. The son of the first duke of Epernon, Bernard was an important military leader. He married Cardinal Richelieu's niece, but there was no love lost between the two men; after a failed military operation, Richelieu pushed to have Bernard tried before the king. Bernard was sentenced to execution but escaped to England, where in 1645 he received the Order of the Garter from Charles I. Later, after Louis XIII had passed away, Bernard's conviction was cancelled and Bernard returned to France. Some sources indicate he left behind a family (Antoinette Faudouas and son Jean d'Epernon) in Glamorgan, Wales. Back in France he returned to public service as governor of Guyenne and later Burgundy, before dying in Paris at the age of 69.
