Simon Starling

(1967-), Artist

Sitter in 1 portrait
Born in Epsom, Surrey, Starling graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1992. In 1999 he was awarded a Henry Moore Sculpture Fellowship and was artist-in-residence at Camden Arts Centre, where he had a solo show in 2000. Starling describes his work as a 'physical manifestation of a thought process' and is focused on ideas of process and change. In 2005 he won the Turner Prize for work including Shedboatshed (2005, pictured here) consisting of a wooden shed, previously dismantled, converted into a boat, and sailed down the Rhine before being reassembled by Starling. 'Art for me is a free space to explore things.'
