Before moving to Ely Cathedral in 1970, George Youell was Archdeacon of Stoke from 1976 and Anglican chaplain to the University College of North Staffordshire (the University of Keele from 1962) where he had a reputation as a caring priest to both staff and students. He had a self deprecating sense of humour and delighted in regaling new students with the boast that he "was the lowest form of gatered life in the Church of England". At the heart of his ministry was his devation to the Eucharist and his reverence for the sacrament.
