Sitter in 1 portrait
Formula One racing driver. Born in Hertfordshire, Hamilton began his career racing go-karts and became the British Cadet Karting champion aged ten. He became the Formula Renault UK champion (2003), the European Formula 3 champion (2005) and GP2 champion (2006), before making a remarkable Formula One debut in 2007, scoring four wins and six pole positions in his first season and winning the world championship the following year. Winning the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix, Hamilton equalled Michael Schumacher’s record of seven world championship victories, having already broken the record for the greatest number of career Formula One race wins. Hamilton is currently the only black driver in Formula One and has become a vocal advocate for greater diversity in the sport, drawing attention to systemic racism and establishing the Hamilton Commission to address the lack of black representation in the UK motorsport industry.
