John Currin(1962-), Artist
Sitter in 1 portrait
Evocative, varied, and often styled in a deliberately retrograde manner, Currin's depictions of women nearly always induce a sense of the familiar. Currin likes to depict a bizarre and very American world of ageing divorcées, 1970s pin-ups and clichéd gay couples. The mastery of his technique draws on Old Master paintings and drawings. Currin has had major museum survey exhibitions (Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and Whitney Museum of American Art in 2003, and the Serpentine Gallery the same year), and a catalogue raisonné was published by Rizzoli in 2006. Currin was born in Boulder in 1962. He attained a BFA in 1984, and an MFA from Yale University in 1986. He now lives and works in New York.
