He scandalously deserted his post as commander of the 5th Dragoon’s while on their way to the Crimea, leaving his Regiment suffering from cholera. He ought to have been charged with desertion.
Also, he sailed his yacht the “Aurora” in the famous 1851 Royal Yacht Squadron yacht race won by the yacht “America”; coming in second in the fleet of competitors.

Thomas Le Marchant was the youngest brother of (Sir) Denis Le Marchant. He appears in some family letters (written by Denis' sisters-in-law) in the 1840s. I have found a birth date of 21 August 1811; died 8 August 1873. He married (in 1846) Frances Smith, daughter of James Smith of Ashlyns Hall.
