Marc Chagall(1887-1985), Artist
Sitter in 2 portraits
Chagall was born in Vitebsk, Russia, into a devout Jewish family. In 1907 he moved to St Petersburg, where he studied painting, eventually under the tutelage of stage designer Léon Bakst. In 1910, with the help of a bursary, Chagall went to Paris, settling in the bohemian colony of La Ruche (The Beehive). He depicted dreamlike subject matter in rich colours and his imagery, drawn from memories of his early years, included flying lovers, fantastic animals, biblical prophets and fiddlers on roofs.
