I knew 'Uncle Denys' and 'Aunt Lil' (as we called them) from childhood days at Appledore during the War, and we remained close friends until the end of their lives. I have happy memories of staying in their large and atmospheric house at Appledore. Denys Scott ran an ostrich farm for a while in South Africa, and I still have an ostrich egg given me by Aunt Lil at the sad time of her departure from the Holt. I loved them dearly, and remember them every night in my prayers.

I have a photograph of this man, wearing his army uniform, taken in 1907 when he was 29 years old. He appears to be in morning as he has a black armband on his left arm.
