Florence Flora Drummond

(1869-1949), 'General Drummond'; Scottish suffragette

Sitter in 3 portraits
Drummond was affectionately known as 'The General' for leading marches on horseback and wearing an officer's cap. Her application to become a postmistress was rejected on the grounds of her height, encouraging her involvement in politics and women's rights. In Manchester she joined the Independent Labour Party, working in local factories to experience the lives of female employees. Her militant action as a member of the Women's Social and Political Union, led to her being arrested nine times and a three-month sentence. Along with Emmeline Pankhurst she rejected an offer to keep peace for a year, choosing a sentence at Holloway prison. In the 1930s, she joined the Women's Guild of Empire, a right wing league.
