Neville Chamberlain

(1869-1940), Prime Minister; son of Joseph Chamberlain

(Arthur) Neville Chamberlain

Sitter in 48 portraits
Conservative MP for Birmingham (1918-40), Chamberlain was Chancellor of the Exchequer (1923-4), Minister for Health (1924-9) and Chancellor of the Exchequer in the National Government (1931-7), becoming Prime Minister in 1937. His premiership was beset by the question of Germany's territorial ambitions in Europe. To avoid war, Chamberlain met with Adolf Hitler in September 1938, subsequently announcing 'Peace for our time'. However, when Germany invaded Czechoslovakia in March 1939, Chamberlain abandoned appeasement and introduced conscription. After the German invasion of Poland, Britain declared war on Germany on 3 September 1939. Chamberlain resigned in May 1940.
