Politician; noted for his aggressive Toryism. He was father of Winston Churchill. Secretary of State for India, 1855-6, Chancellor of the Exchequer and leader of the House of Commons, 1886. He resigned in December 1886 over the increasing demands on public funds made by the ministers for the Army and Navy.
