Portrait painter. The son of the architect George Dance the Elder he started his career in Rome 1754-65, where he painted history pictures and conversation pieces. A successful London portrait painter in the 1770s, he retired from practice after marrying well and in later years lived as a country gentleman, representing East Grinstead in Parliament. He was created a baronet in 1800.
