Charles Langbridge Morgan

(1894-1958), Novelist and dramatist

Sitter in 33 portraits
Entered the Royal Navy in 1907, but resigned to pursue a literary career, a plan that was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War. He spent most of the war interned in Antwerp, where he wrote his first novel, The Gunroom (1919), recounting his experiences as a young midshipman in the pre-war Royal Navy. After the war, he joined the editorial staff of The Times, serving as principal theatre critic from 1926. In 1929, he published the novel Portrait in a Mirror, followed in 1932 by The Fountain. During World War II, he worked for naval intelligence, and afterwards continued to produce novels and plays. His work was most successful in the 1930s and is little known today.
