Louis Mountbatten, Earl Mountbatten of Burma
(1900-1979), Admiral of the FleetSitter in 74 portraits
Great-grandson of Queen Victoria, Mountbatten joined the navy in 1913 and rose rapidly up the ranks to command HMS Kelly in 1939. He was Chief of Combined Operations (1942-3), Supreme Allied Commander, Asia (1943-6), the last Viceroy of India (1947) and Chief of Defence Staff (1959-65). He was assassinated by an IRA bomb in 1979.
