Having worked initially in the silk trade, Henry Pickersgill enrolled at the Royal Academy schools in 1805 and began exhibiting there the following year. Pickersgill was for over sixty years a constant and prolific exhibitor at the Royal Academy, where nearly four hundred of his paintings were shown. He was elected an associate in 1822 and a royal academician in 1826. During his long career, he painted nearly all of the most celebrated people of his time. In 1856, Pickersgill became librarian of the Royal Academy, and held the post until his death.
