John James Robert Manners, 7th Duke of Rutland

(1818-1906), Politician, First Commissioner of Works and MP for several constituencies

Manners entered parliament as a Tory MP in 1841. He was a leading figure in the Young England movement that was led by Benjamin Disraeli. This idealistic movement asserted the need for a social politics, led by a regenerated aristocracy. Manners was an unswerving supporter of Disraeli, and acted as his counsellor on public affairs and political tactics. This loyalty earned him a place in all Conservative governments between 1852 and 1892. He held cabinet posts as First Commissioner of Works, Postmaster-General and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
