Spencer studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London (1907-12). He became known for biblical scenes situated in Cookham, Berkshire, his birthplace. In 1918 he was commissioned as an official war artist and produced Travoys with Wounded Soldiers. His most ambitious evocation of the war is the Sandham Memorial Chapel at Burghclere (1927-32). After the war, he lived and worked in Cookham. Other notable paintings include The Resurrection, Cookham (1924-6), showing his love for his first wife Hilda, and Double Nude Portrait: The Artist and His Second Wife (1937). He was elected a Royal Academician in 1950 and knighted in 1959. Retrospective exhibitions of his work were held at the Tate Gallery in 1955 and 2001.
