Poet and man of letters. Spender met W.H. Auden and other writers of Auden's circle at Oxford University before going to Berlin in 1930 and later to Spain, during the Civil War. He held many academic appointments in England and the USA and was editor (with Cyril Connolly) of Horizon (1939-41) and of Encounter (1953-66). His first major collection of poetry, Poems (1933), was followed by, amongst others, The Still Centre (1939), Poems of Dedication (1947) and The Generous Days (1969). His highly acclaimed autobiography , World Within a World (1953) details his experiences as well as those of his friends, at the front.
