Politician, art patron and landowner. 'A leviathan of wealth', owner of the Bridgewater canal and an investor in the Manchester-Liverpool railway, he was known for clearing peasant farmers from the Scottish Highland and for constructing a vast network of roads and bridges. He was an early benefactor of the National Gallery and President of the British Institution.
