Dylan Thomas

(1914-1953), Poet

Sitter in 22 portraits
Born in Swansea, Thomas wrote for the South Wales Evening Post before moving to London. His poetry was admired by T.S. Eliot, Edith Sitwell and Stephen Spender. The collection Eighteen Poems (1934) established him in literary circles. Much of his writing evoked his life in Wales, including Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog (1940). Further stories and poems were published as Twenty-Five Poems (1936), The Map of Love (1939) and Deaths and Entrances (1946), including his best-known poem Fern Hill. From 1940 Thomas was a regular broadcaster and scriptwriter for the BBC. He toured America in 1950, 1952 and 1953. He completed the radio play Under Milk Wood in May 1953, shortly before his death from alcohol abuse.
