Lillah McCarthy

Actress and theatre manager. Lillah McCarthy made her debut on the London stage in 1895 and found instant success. She joined the leading actor and playwright, Wilson Barrett, at the Lyric Theatre the next year, followed by a tour of Australia. Upon her return in 1900, she became the leading lady in Quo Vadis?, The Sign of the Cross, Hamlet, and Othello. In 1906, McCarthy married the actor and theatre director, Harley Granville-Barker, who she had met while playing his opposite in Man and Superman. She appeared in his historic Shakespeare productions at the Savoy Theatre (1912-14) after she had herself assumed the management of the nearby Little Theatre in 1911.
