Bertram Park

(1883-1972), Photographer

Sitter in 20 portraits
Artist associated with 147 portraits
Having started in the family firm, manufacturers of artist's materials, Park developed an interest in photography and became a professional portraitist. He was a founder member of the London Salon of Photography in 1910. Park set up studios on Dover Street, London with Marcus Adams and his wife Yvonne Gregory in 1919. He was successful, being obliged to have up to five sittings a day to satisfy the demand. He photographed the British Royal Family, and his reputation was such that various European crowned heads would come annually to his studio to be photographed. His stylish and beautifully composed portrait studies more often relied on dramatic lighting than on elaborate backgrounds.

Hello! Several years ago I bought a travel diary. The writer started at 1893 till 1900. The diary contains different descriptions drawings and photos. One of the photos, made from "Kropsburg" in Germany on 28th of April in 1900 there is a handwritten commentary: "Taken by Bertram Park".

Bertram Park was my great uncle. I am interested more in his photography than his books on roses. I have miniatures of myself and my mother painted by his wife Yvonne Gregory. His family owned the Roberson art and paint materials company. l too would like to know more about him. l am waiting to receive copies of his books 'The Beauty of the female form' and 'Living Sculptures' as I make sculptures.
