During the Second World War he reached the rank of brigadier and was Deputy Chief of Staff of the British Second Army. He was elected to the House of Commons in the 1945 general election. Originally a Liberal, he became a member of the 'Young Turks' faction of the Conservative Party. Lloyd served in a number of ministerial posts in the Conservative government that was elected in 1951. He was Foreign Secretary during the Suez Crisis of 1955, which led to the fall of the Eden government. He served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1960 to 1962 and as Speaker of the House of Commons from 1971 to 1976.
