Lemuel Francis Abbott

(circa 1760-1802), Portrait painter

Sitter in 1 portrait
Artist associated with 79 portraits
In 1775, at the age of fourteen, Abbott was apprenticed to Francis Hayman, after whose death in the following year he returned to his parents and probably continued to study portrait painting independently. In around 1780, he moved to London, and between 1788 and 1800 he showed fifteen male portraits at the Royal Academy. Abbott portrayed many diplomats, colonial governors and senior naval officers. His portraits were engraved by, among others, Valentine Green, Joseph Skelton and William Walker.
