Artist associated with 58 portraits
The German painter John Closterman arrived in England in 1681 after working in Paris. In 1698, Closterman went on a Grand Tour to Italy and Spain to study art. This was probably supported by the Earl of Shaftesbury, a classical scholar and philosopher.
