John Giles Eccardt

John Giles Eccardt was born in Germany and is thought to have moved to England at an early age, possibly with the French portrait painter J.B. Van Loo. In London, he was assistant to Van Loo, but when his master left Britain in 1742, Eccardt and another assistant, Root, remained and set up for themselves. Working in partnership Eccardt and Root met with some success in the portrait business, Root painting the draperies and Eccardt the faces of the sitters who were attracted by the painters' continued use of Van Loo's style. Eccardt specialised in small-scale portraits, including at least twenty-six for his most important patron, Horace Walpole, painted between 1746 and 1754.
