John Keyse Sherwin

(1751-1790), Draughtsman and engraver

Sitter in 2 portraits
Artist associated with 50 portraits
Sherwin's talents were recognised at an early age and he became a pupil, first of John Astley, and then of Francis Bartolozzi. He studied at the Royal Academy schools between 1770 and 1774, in 1772 gaining the gold medal for a historical picture. He set up on his own in 1774, and over the next six years he exhibited chalk drawings and engravings at the Royal Academy. In 1785, he succeeded William Woollett as engraver to the king. Despite Sherwin's successes, however, he apparently lived a dissolute life, destroying his health and leading to his death at the age of thirty-nine. John Sherwin was the brother of Charles Sherwin, who worked as his assistant.
