The actor, art director and photographer Cavendish Morton was born in New York to British parents. He took up photography in the late 1890s, photographing an actor in Lillie Langtry's production of The Degenerates. Morton had a studio at 60 Primrose Mansions, Battersea Park, London. He specialised in stage and society portraits, experimented with the autochrome process and became a leading photographer of the Edwardian period.
