Edward Cooper was the most distinguished print publisher of his generation and a leading figure in the art world. He was recognised as an authority on the fine arts, and sold paintings and art materials. He employed engravers such as John Smith and Isaac Beckett and cultivated leading portrait painters including Godfrey Kneller, William Wissing and Frederic Kerseboom. He was a member of the Society of the Virtuosi of St Luke, the earliest art society in the country, and was one of George Vertue's advisers about art history.
