Marie, Queen of Romania

(1875-1938), Nurse and writer; wife of Ferdinand I, King of Romania; daughter of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh

Sitter in 62 portraits
The daughter of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, granddaughter of Queen Victoria and through her mother the Czar of Russia. Marie married Ferdinand, Crown Prince of Romania in 1893. There she became interested in folk costume and often wore national dress. Marie devoted much of her time to charitable works. She spent World War I nursing Romanian soldiers and distributing provisions from her Rolls Royce. Her two eldest daughters married King George II of Greece and King Alexander I of Yugoslavia. Marie became known as 'Queen Mother of the Balkans'.

There are occasions when we are unsure of the identity of a sitter or artist, their life dates, occupation or have not recorded their family relationships. Sometimes we have not recorded the date of a portrait. Do you have specialist knowledge or a particular interest about any aspect of the portrait or sitter or artist that you can share with us? We would welcome any information that adds to and enhances our information and understanding about a particular portrait, sitter or artist.
