David George Brownlow Cecil, 6th Marquess of Exeter
(1905-1981), Conservative politician; MP for Peterborough and hurdler; OlympianSitter in 29 portraits
The world's pre-eminent hurdler in the 1920s and star student athlete at Cambridge University, dramatised in the film Chariots of Fire (1981). Lord Burghley, as he was known at the time, won gold for the 400 metres hurdles at the 1928 Amsterdam Games. British Olympic captain at the 1932 and 1936 Games, Burghley was also a Member of Parliament, President of the British Olympic Association (1936-77) and chaired the committee that took just two years to organise the 1948 London Olympic Games.
