Ludwig Angerer

(1827-1879), Photographer

Artist of 41 portraits
Born in Malaczka, Hungary, in 1827, Ludwig Angerer opened his first photographic studio in Vienna in the late 1850s. He produced cartes-de-visite and other portraits of many famous Austrians, for example the Imperial family, including Empress Elizabeth, and military heroes. In around 1860 he was appointed official court photographer. After his death in Vienna in 1879, his business continued under the direction of his brother, Viktor (1839-1894), and later under Viktor's son-in-law, Moritz Winter. The National Portrait Gallery holds more than 20 of his photographs.
